If you make the decision to select a landscaper to design and put your yard together, I would strongly suggest that you do planning and background checks on the landscaper. Not all landscape companies are created equally. I would say that at least 50% of the landscapers that I am aware of do poor cheap work and you will not be satisfied with their work. On the other hand, if you get someone who is meticulous in their work, follows the plan at hand and is conscientious to consult with you on any problems or concerns, you will have a great experience.
This brings up the #1 issue. Winging it is not a good idea. Put together a plan and make sure your concepts are very well thought through before engaging a Landscaping firm.
Below are Five major tips and helps to ensure that you have great success in contracting a landscaper.
1. Have the designer (or yourself) inspect the property and create a detailed sketch map of the plans for the work to be done. Make sure that you note any special requirements or concerns.
2. If possible, it is wise to select a landscaper who is approved by the American Society of Landscape Designers. This can be done by doing a search at www.asla.org. this does not guarantee success, but it does increase your odd by getting someone who is certified, licensed and educated to meet or exceed industry standards.
3. Fancy landscapes cost a lot of money. Make a budget and select a landscaper that fits the need of the project. Get at least three bids and proposals and designs before selecting the final landscaper. Make sure that you sign a contract and get all agreements in writing so that you do not over-run your budget.
4. Make sure that the contractor works with local government officials, blue stakes, and receives appropriate permits and approvals. Do all possible to ensure that your contractor is using bonded legal workers and following all appropriate safety standards. Protect your liability by asking all contractors to physically show you proof of licensing, bonding, and insurance before the project begins.
5. Inspect the work several times in the project. Of course a final inspection is vital. Do make sure that you withhold final payment until everything is completed to your full satisfaction.
